Electric Wizard – Black Mass

Been cranking up the brand new Electric Wizard the past few weeks, and I just cant seem to get enough of it. These British doom merchants have been out there blasting the dark space riffs  for the past fifteen years, but Black Mass is their most grooviest album to date.

Some of the most evil and eerie moments for your humble narrator….

This is an older song by one of my favorite stoner rock bands ever Electric Wizard, and the track is called “Ivixor B”. This is 1:57 minutes of pure psychotic, evil sexiness my fellow droogs.

The first time I heard this song, I was totally enraptured by it’s middle eastern, doomy aura. I’ve never actually killed anyone before. Well that’s not entirley true, I did dream the other day that I knocked off that damn neighbor of mine who decides to keep his dog off leash in the courtyard. “Ivixor B” would be the song to have in the background after the bloody carnage is complete.

Turn off the lights, close your eyes, and really listen to this. You’ll get what I’m trying to convey.

This is another oldie but goodie. “Drive Fast, Take Chances” is done by San Francisco doom metal merchants Acid King. The first time I heard this, I was ironically driving and had to pull over to take it all in. “Drive Fast” sways, and grooves with the best of em’, but there’s a creepy, backwoods, Deliverance kind of feel to this. The secret ingredient is the vocals, as Lori has got one of the most soulful voices out there.

This song can be found on the classic gem Busse Woods. Probably the best of the batch on the late Mans Ruin Records catalogue. Acid King was, and sill is a great stoner rock treasure.

The Abominable Iron Sloth – The Id Will Overcome

Man this one hit me like a ton of bricks. This sludgy mass of stoner metal is done with pure, raw conviction. There are so many different styles I hear on The Id Will Overcome. From Sabbath, to Electric Wizard,  to Acid Rain, all of ‘em are put in a blender and spit out in this venomous form.

I love the production on this album. The sound is raw, loud, and rugged, but doesn’t end up meshing into a senseless wall of noise. I haven’t heard vocals this demented since Kirk Fisher’s (Buzzoven fame). This leads to the only minor complaint I have in bands of this ilk. The vocals can tend to be a bit over bearing by the time one gets to the end of the record. The guitar and bass sound on this though, is like a step out of the European stoner rock time machine circa 1998. The only thing that’s missing is the cowbell.

Clutch European tour….

Baltimore DC’s favorite stoner rock sons Clutch will be doing a string of live dates across Europe this summer. This will come at the tail end of their live DVD release called Live at the 9:30 which will be out on May 11th.

Clutch is a working man’s band as I have seen them live seven times from 1994 – 2008 and each show has been consistently good. Their albums have sometimes been a hit and miss (I prefer their early material), but Clutch have never faltered on the live end of things. I would definitely recommend checking them out, as if slow, southern fried, barbeque on a sunday afternoon, “pass the grits ‘ma”, stoner rock you seek, you shall receive on stage.

Plus you will get to see my favorite drummer ever Jean-Paul Gaster annihilate the songs with his down home rhythmic delivery. This dude is a behemoth behind the kit and has kept the in-the-pocket groove intact throughout Clutch’s illustrious career. So to all you European Clutch fans, run outta the house, and go see em’….but don’t spill the bong water on your way out.

Cathedral – The Carnival Bizarre

The doom masters have done it again. One of the most consistent bands in the doom scene put out another solid record….and could you even think any different? Lee Dorian probably never expected that Cathedral would be able to continue twenty years on, but not only have they continued, they are still able to put out solid stuff.

Black Betty – Self Titled

The first time I saw this band live in 2008, my life had changed. I saw these guys on the recommendation of a friend and went to see them in a dingy club in East Van. This two piece blew my muther trucking mind that night. It was like truly finding god on a mountain top. I could not believe that a two piece band could make that potent of music, but I was made a believer right there and then my brothers n’ sisters.
