Cancer Bats – Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones

This is blunt force trauma on wax. From the get go of the first track “Sleep This Way”, this album doesn’t let up for a second. It sways and grooves with the best of em’. Describing Cancer bats sound is pretty tough, as it”s all over the place, and this album is no different. It sways like a more rugged Vulgar Display Of Power, old Refused, to Time Heals Nothing-era Crowbar. My favorite track “Raised Right” is tacked on at the very end, where the band sound like their channelling Philip Anselmo’s down home Louisiana swamp tones on this one.
Bears has a lot of depth. The songs go from fast, mid range, and slow, but the heaviness of it all remains in tact throughout. Once second you’re riding a gently wave on “Snake Mountain”, a few minutes later your bludgeoned in the head on “We Are the Undead”. Blimey!!!
The production on this album is hella thick, and no instrument is left behind, as it;s all up front in the mix. The screamed vocals are guiding this evil ghost ship, but it’s all decipherable my friends. Cookie monster vocals need not apply in this one.
Cancer Bat fans struck gold with this one. Groovy, catchy, and abrasive at the same time. Who said it couldn’t be done.
