Hardcore shows in Vancouver….

Hardcore shows in Vancouver dried up for awhile in 2009, but the beginning of 2010 looks to be a great start. Outbreak & Forfeit will be coming to New Westminster Feb 2nd at the Arundel Mansion. This is a diverse bill as Outbreak represent that old school Bad Brains/Minor Threat vibe, while Forfeit are more on the thugcore Blood Stands Still side of life.

For all you rubber neck’s out there that cant resist watching a wreck…will have I got a treat for you. This makes anything David Hasselhoff put out in the 80′s on vinyl seem like Napalm Death. This five piece atrocity called Attack Attack has it all…choreographed dance moves, auto tune lead vocals, and a singing / dancing monkey fronting the band. Wow….just when I thought I seen it all…this makes 2 girls 1 cup seem tame…..you have been warned my friends…this shit aint pretty.

The German hard rock kings bow out gracefully….

Germany’s favourite sons have decided to pack it in after more than 30 years. My love for the Scorpions came in 1985 after I purchased their cassette tape World Wide Live. That record was hit after hit….The Zoo, Big City Nights, Rock You Like A Hurricane, Bad Boys Running Wild. After that record, I picked up all their back catalogue from Lovedrive to Love At First Sting. All of it essential listening to any self respecting hard rock fan.

Too many LA Guns lineups….

I remember being so exited to see AC/DC in the summer of 1991 at the PNE Coliseum in Vancouver. Not just because I was seeing AC/DC in their prime during their Razor’s Edge tour, but because my favourite band at the time LA Guns was their opening act. The Guns were promoting their album Hollywood Vampires, as it was just about to come out in the record stores that summer. The classic line up of the first three albums had a chemistry that could not be beat. The band consisted of Phil Lewis, Tracii Guns, Mick Cripps, Kelly Nickels & Steve Riley. I was blown away on how tight and charismatic the band was live that night. AC/DC audiences are a fickle bunch as I saw King’s X open for them six months earlier and they got booed off the stage, but LA Guns totally won them over that night. They payed new songs that no one knew off Hollywood Vampires and the audience was totally into them. That is usually a good sign if the audience actually gets psyched on hearing new material live.

Where did all the metal magazines go????….

I remember when a metal head had a dozen of choices for monthly reading material. Circus Magazine, Hit Parader, RIP,  Metal Edge, Metal Maniacs, Brave Words Bloody Knuckles….one by one they all went away. The demise of Brave Words was the most tragic to me of all, as it was  the only one that was a Canadian based magazine that focused on everything metal. There are a few still  mags out there like Metal Hammer, Terrorizer, and Revolver, but not as many as there used to be.

Venom….

If there is one band out there that has influenced so many different styles of metal bands, it is Venom. Everyone from Skid Row, Darkthrone, to Pantera has cited these three satanic war mongers as influences.

My run in with Venom happened when I was fourteen. I was watching MuchMusic & Venom’s video for their song Bloodlust came on. Let me tell you, it scared me shitless. I had to cover my hand over my eyes, as there was this very eire vibe about the band. Cronos the lead singer was like this demon like evil figure on stage. The song itself was a sloppy tune with an morbid vibe of some sort.

When I see the video now though, it seems almost humorous, and very Spinal Tap like. Venom’s music still lives on though, as you can hear their influence in many of the new bands out today (Toxic Holocaust, Gallhammer). Long live the black metal kings!

Lets put the CD vs Download debate to rest people….

A lot of the old time music fans chastise the internet these days, saying it has destroyed the music industry. Not this old timer. I think it’s not such a black and white issue. While we can all agree that people who steal music are complete fucking morons who should be ass raped on a cold winters day.  The idea that the internet for music use is all downside is wrong. I love that I can go to Amazon or Cdbaby & listen to as much albums as I want before I decide to purchase them. I remember going into HMV back in the day and getting the look of death when I would bring fifteen CD’s to the listening booth only to be read the riot act of the “only three CD per person on listening booth”.

Thrashing in Japan…

If you’re a thrash fan living in Japan, then here is some news that will get you doing the toxic waltz right about now. The tour is dubbed Extreme Dojo & will hit three cities in Japan this spring. The bill consists of the three new school thrash bands on the scene right now….Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, & Warbringer.  These three bands are all unique in their own way, even though they have all been lumped in the thrash genre. Toxic Holocaust mix Pleasure of the Flesh style thrash with a lil of the ol sloppy, Hellhammerish black metal. Warbringer is more of a fun, D.R.I crossover angle. While Warbringer is straight up Defiance, & Paul Baloff era Exodus.

Thick As Blood – Embrace

Chalk up another home run for Eulogy Records for signing this band. If another dose of brutal breakdown you seek, then this is the band for you. This Miami five piece of cholos kick the shit for thirty minutes without letting up. Reminds me of early Terror, Hatebreed, and Ramallah in sound and force.

New Ratt record…..

Road Runner/Loud & Proud Records will be putting out the new Ratt record “Infestation” out this spring. This record has been ten years in the making. The last RATT record came out in 1999 with no fanfare due to zero promotion. Lets hope Road Runner put all their efforts into making this one successful, as their is not better time than now due to the popularity of hard rock.
